Victoria’s iconic Cittadella rises above the rooftops, visible from as far as the surrounding fields and the coast beyond. As the capital of Gozo, it’s an atmospheric but practical city, with a market, healthcare and amenities like banks and entertainment all close at hand. It’s this combination that makes properties for rent in Victoria, Gozo so sought after, whether you know the town by its official name or by Rabat, the name plenty of locals still use. Renters have a wide choice of property, from apartments and penthouses to houses, maisonettes, townhouses and the odd farmhouse, most opening onto rooftops and countryside.
Mornings in Victoria tend to start at It-Tokk, the market square everyone still calls by its old name even though it’s officially Independence Square. There’s a coffee stop, a stall or two worth stopping at, and the kind of foot traffic that tells you this is where Gozo actually does its errands. From there, Main Street and the streets around it hold most of the shops, banks and the post office, so an afternoon of admin rarely means leaving town.
The Cittadella sits above all of this, and it’s worth the walk up just for the view back over the rooftops towards the countryside. Gozo General Hospital and most doctors’ clinics are a short walk from the centre too, which matters more once you’re actually living here rather than just visiting.
Evenings favour intimate drinks and dinner over loud bars or clubs. The Cittadella empties out once the day’s visitors leave, its walls lit against the dark and offering sweeping views over the island in near silence. Around Independence Square and the piazzas nearby, restaurants and wine bars stay open and mildly busy without ever tipping into a club scene. Duck into the backstreets behind the square and the noise falls away almost entirely, just quiet doorways and lit windows on the walk home.
As Victoria sits inland, most apartments look out over rooftops, church domes and the surrounding countryside instead of the sea. Many come with a terrace, which makes the most of those views.
Penthouses in and around Victoria tend to have more outdoor space, so are popular with renters who want a bit more room without moving out of town.
Houses for rent range from modern builds to older Gozitan properties. Some come with a private garden or pool, which is more realistic than in Malta’s denser towns.
Maisonettes are a middle ground between an apartment and a full house, and many come with their own garden or shared pool access.
Traditional townhouses, often with the wooden balconies (gallariji) typical of Gozo, sit throughout the older streets closer to the centre.
A smaller number of farmhouses come up for rent around Victoria’s edges, usually traded on their views over the surrounding valleys rather than their proximity to the centre. Villas are an even rarer listing, and tend to come up on the outskirts of Victoria.
This is Victoria at its most central: the market, the main square, and the streets that fan out from it. Renters here are paying for convenience, with shops, restaurants and services on the doorstep.
Just outside the centre on the Rabat–Xlendi road, Fontana is quieter and closer to open countryside, while still being a short walk from Victoria’s shops and services. Some renters searching for property for rent in Rabat end up here, drawn by the same town with a slightly slower pace.
To the south-west, the streets thin out into valleys and countryside heading towards Xlendi. It suits renters who want a quieter setting but still need Victoria’s services within easy reach.
Rabat is the older, local name for Victoria, and both refer to the same town. Property listed under either name sits in the same central area of Gozo.
Alongside smaller flats, Victoria has a good number of spacious apartments for rent, some with three or more bedrooms and a terrace. They suit anyone looking to rent in Gozo long-term rather than for a short stay, and many sit within walking distance of Independence Square and Main Street.
Terraced houses are one of the more common property types here, particularly in the older streets closer to the centre. Most are let on a long-term basis rather than short-term, which suits renters after long-term rentals rather than a holiday base.
The Gozo Sports Complex on Europe Street sits close to the town centre, and many properties for rent in Victoria are within walking distance of it. It’s a good option for renters who want gym, pool or sports facilities without needing a car.
